What is Wellness?

You may have noticed that the concept of wellness means different things to different people.  Some believe it is strictly the absence of disease while other feel it is much more than this.

We define wellness as the pursuit of a lifestyle that produces an overall feeling of well-being through a healthy balance of the mind, body and spirit.

The components of wellness can be seen in the Venn-diagram on the right.  VennEach of the spheres of this diagram represents the functional status of an individual system foundational to wellness.  Moreover, as seen by the intersection of the spheres, this diagram depicts that each system affects and is affected by the rest.  It is therefore understandable that when one component goes awry, true wellness cannot be achieved or maintained.  Let us explore each functional component of wellness individually.

  • Physical Status  refers to physical attributes and conditioning as well as metabolic function.  It is founded in the various bodily systems working in harmony (cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, etc.). Functional Medicine

Functional Medicine is not considered alternative medicine, instead it is actually a science based evolution in the practice of medicine, that better addresses your healthcare needs.  By shifting the traditional disease-centered focus of a typical medical practice to a more patient-centered approach, functional medicine addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms.

We look at the challenges you and/or your loved ones are facing as deficits in wellness.  As explained, true wellness is only achieved when all the bodily systems are functioning and integrating at full capacity.  We offer an all-natural, integrative approach of developing functions that are underdeveloped, restoring functions that have been lost, and maintaining function at an optimum.

We address the underlying cause of your complaint as opposed to the traditional approach of treating the symptom. We also spend time with our patients, listening to their histories and looking at the interactions among genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that can influence long-term health and complex, chronic disease.

Functional Nutrition addresses the foundational way that food affects your body on the cellular level.  Food is much more than calories, in fact there are millions of molecules in every bite of food that you eat.  These molecules come into your body, affect how your cells behave and ultimately determine how you feel.

Eating correctly is essential for recovering from a current illness as well as preventing future disease.  For example, specific nutrients can help your liver detoxification pathways, give you sustained energy, help you sleep deeply, and support your general well-being. This is because many of these issues are founded in a disruption of body and brain function that can’t be merely changed with a pill.
